In Other News…

Since most of the focus has been on the upcoming World Cup and USA’s roster (which I have yet to comment on, so some of you should be prepared to be ripped), I thought I’d point out some things happening abroad:

- Yesterday’s matches concluded the EPL season, with Chelsea again the champions. I will have a review of American EPLers soon.

- While there is no article to link to, it has been reported that Brian McBride has been named Fulham’s Player of the Year. McBride was second on the team with 10 goals in 39 games. Congrats to Brian!

- Add another American to the list of those playing in the EPL, as the first summer transfer has come through. Cory Gibbs has signed a contract with Charlton Athletic, pending him revceiving a work permit. This should be a good move for Cory, however, Charlton’s lack of a manager for next season leaves me a bit worried as to where Cory stands once a replacement is hired.

- Jonathan Spector’s year long loan with Charlton has ended and after recovering from his shoulder injury, he plans to crack the first-team at Manchester United next season.

No World Cup for Spector

Sadly, Jonathan Spector will not be going to the World Cup. Spector separated his shoulder over the weekend in an EPL game and will need surgery. There is no date set for his return, but he will not be ready in time for the World Cup.

I’m not sure what The Bruce was thinking, but I had Spector as one of the last additions to my World Cup roster. Whether you agree or not, it’s still unfortunate to watch someone’s World Cup dreams go down to an injury (hello Chris Armas). Spector is young and will hopefully have a few World Cups by the time he retires.
