A game between Palermo and Catania go out of control and a police officer was killed along with 150 people injured. Play was suspended for a half hour when tear gas from outside the stadium impeded play. Fights between rioters and the police lasted for hours after the game. During this violence a large firecracker exploded in 38-year old police officer Filippo Raciti’s face and he died upon arrival at hospital. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC), which has indefinitely suspended all games (including their friendly with Romania on Wednesday), called for a moment of silence on Saturday and Sunday. There will be investigations into what exactly happened but it’s sad that, what comes down to a game, had to take someone’s life. I know they take their soccer seriously but c’mon, let’s not get out of hand.
