Not only are we finally back from vacation (sorry for the long layoff in posts), but so are many of the leagues across the pond…that’s right, European football is getting underway as are our Yanks Abroad.
First, what we missed. In our time away, the USMNT won the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup by beating Panama 3-1 on penalty kicks after a nil-nil draw. Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, and Oguchi Onyweu were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Kasey Keller and John O’Brien were honorable mentions. Congrats to Bruce Arena and the boys.
Now after a long wait, leagues across the pond get under way. Starting this weekend, the German Bundesliga, English Championship, and Belgian league open their 2005-2006 seasons.
Nats in Germany include Borussia Monchengladbach’s Keller, Hannover 96’s Steve Cherundolo, and Mainz’s Conor Casey. The Belgian league features Standard Liege’s Onyewu. The plethora of Americans in the Coca-Cola Championship include Leeds’ Eddie Lewis, Reading’s Marcus Hahnemann and Bobby Convey, Burnley’s Danny Karbassiyoon, Sheffield Wednesday’s Frankie Simek, and Watford’s Jay DeMerit.
Good luck to all our players abroad, and check back here for updates on their performances…
