DC United v. Chicago Fire

Just came back from RFK where DC United beat the Fire 4 to 3. The first half was pretty sloppy offensively, and defense on both sides was pretty bad for the whole game. After Jaime Moreno scored on a penalty kick to make it 2-1 Fire just before half, he and Zach Thornton got into a weird collision going after the ball after he scored. Thornton got a yellow card after the two teams got into a little pushing match. Thornton was booed incessantly for the rest of the game. The second half saw DC United step up its offense and overcome a 3-2 deficit to win. Zach Thornton made some quality saves but his defense let him down, which included Tony Sanneh, although he had some good touches on the ball. Clyde Simms came in the second half and did well in a short time and Josh Gros ran well on the left.
My Man of the Match: Christian Gomez, scored 2 goals. Honorable mention for Dema Kovalenko.
Biggest Disappointment: Ben Olsen. Supposed to be the holding midfielder. Only thing he was holding was the Chicago Fire jersey as it ran by him.

2005 FIFA World Youth Championship

Update on the FIFA World Youth Championship…

The U.S. U-20’s tied Germany nil-nil in their second game in group play. The game, especially the first half, was dominated by the Americans, but they were unable to finish their chances. Freddy Adu, playing mostly as a wide left midfielder, played well in spurts, created many of the chances, and took the majority of free and corner kicks. MetroStars attacking midfielder Eddie Gaven played below expectations for the second game in a row.

Official match report for the game against Germany here
Match report for the first game against Argentina here, a 1-0 win for the U.S., an upset that should rank up their with U.S.-Portugal.

With 1 game left and 4 points, the U.S. is in prime position to advance to the next round. Their next and last group game is against what is considered the weakest team in the group, Egypt (0-2), on Saturday. Also benefitting the U.S. is that Germany (tied atop the group with 4 points) and Argentina (3 points) have to battle each other. So a tie against Egypt would see the U.S. U-2o’s moving on.
