Lalas President and GM of Metros

David’s Ditties…

-Good ol’ Alexi Lalas is the new president and GM of the Metrostars. He’s the first former MLS player to become a GM. I caught an interview he did today on ESPN and he seems to be serious about improving the MLS to be recognized as one of the best leagues in the world but didn’t have any convincing answers on how he would improve the Metros. He mentioned putting more money into the league (hinting at pushing the cap) as well as attracting bigger international stars and increasing attendance as some of his main goals. His big claim was that he wanted to make the Metrostars the first “MLS Super Club”. Good luck. The ESPN commentator who knew little about soccer did show that somebody (besides the diehards) was watching in 2002, mentioning the Germany handball in the box. When asked how far he thinks USA will go in 2006, he didn’t give a definite round but said they should go far.

-Which brings me to the computer chip in the ball (which would’ve been great in the Champions League). It sounds like a good idea (who knows it could’ve affected USA in 2002 versus Germany) but I wonder how it relays the message to the ref like John said.

Quote of the Day: “If they don’t qualify, Bruce Arena should fire himself.”-Alexi Lalas on USA qualifying for WC 2006.

Soccer goes hi-tech?

Well this isn’t directly related to the MNT, but it’s really interesting anyway. First, I am curious about how the ball’s position will be detected. It seems simple enough to place a radio frequency emitting chip in the ball, but what will be the recievers? I would imagine there would have to be some sort of triangulation or some such thing.
Second, I kind of like the ‘old fashioned’ feel of soccer, when compared to the other major sports which make extensive use of instant replay (baseball aside). Just a ball, a net, two teams, and a ref.
