Eddie Johnson Out of Gold Cup

Due to his ongoing turf toe injury, Eddie Johnson has been dropped from the roster for the upcoming Gold Cup. His replacement is D.C. United forward Santino Quaranta.

Interesting choice by Bruce Arena. Quaranta hasn’t been getting minutes until recently with United, and he doesn’t have the stats of a Jeff Cunningham, nor probably the potential of an Edson Buddle. It seems he has been playing well recently though, and you never know why The Bruce does things/what he sees in a player that us mere mortals can’t.

Gold Cup Roster

Bruce Arena has named his 23 man Gold Cup roster. Contrary to popular rumors and fan requests, Arena has stuck with mostly familiar faces instead of testing new players.

Returning to the National Team are defender Tony Sanneh, and midfielders Chris Armas, John O’Brien, and Ben Olsen. The only three non-capped players on the roster are goalie Matt Reis, central defender Jimmy Conrad, and midfielder Brad Davis.

Lewis Moves to Leeds

Eddie Lewis has moved to Leeds United from Preston North End on a free transfer because he was out of contract with PNE. Leeds seemed excited to be getting a true left-sided player, something they haven’t had in a few years.

It’s a bit of a surprising move for a few reasons. First, Lewis was rumored to be going to Sunderland, recently promoted to the Premiership (while Leeds and PNE are both playing next season in the Championship). It was probably wishful thinking, but Lewis could have drawn some interest from Premiership sides. Second, due to undisclosed family issues (I think he has a sick kid), it was possible that Lewis would return to the States to be with his family and play in MLS. Finally, PNE was in the promotion playoffs this year, barely missing out moving up to the Premiership, while Leeds, relegated from the top division last year, was mid-table most of the year. One would think Lewis would have a better chance of fulfilling his dream of playing in the Premier League with PNE than with Leeds. But it’s still early in the silly season, and only time will tell what kind of team Leeds will have this upcoming year.

Here’s hoping it works out well for Lewis, Leeds, and the USMNT.

U.S. Crashes Out of World Youth Championship

The U.S. U-20s were eliminated today by Italy, losing 3-1 in largely a disappointing performance, including 2 own goals.

At the very end of the first half Freddy Adu won a penalty kick. His attempt was saved, but the referee ordered a rekick because the goalie had come off his line too early. Adu was replaced by left back Hunter Freeman, who slotted the ball home off the goalie’s outstretched arm. Italy came out of half-time a different team, and the U.S. folded under the pressure. The first Italian goal was a long range shot that was deflected by Manchester United defender Jonathan Spector, catching goalkeeper Quentin Westberg off-guard, and found it’s way into the U.S. net. Later, Spector, back after getting injured in the first game, was dispossesed in midfield leading to an Italian break and their second goal. Italy’s third goal was once again a disastrous own goal. Substitute Sacha Kljestan stuck out a foot to deflect an Italian cross away for a corner, but instead redirected the ball into his own net. All of this in a span of 20 minutes, and the U.S. had no response.

After starting out strong, the tournament has to be considered a disappointment for the U.S. 3 goals for in 4 games is not going to cut it. If not for their defense (which hadn’t allowed a goal before today’s second half collapse), the U.S. may not have made it out the group stage. By most accounts, right back Marvell Wynne (an animal down the flank) and midfielder Benny Feilhaber were the best U.S. players in the tournament.

Which means Adu, Eddie Gaven, and Spector performed well below expectations. Coach Sigi Schmid and Adu both said he didn’t show up in today’s game. Adu called himself awful in the tournament. Who knows if Gaven ever really got off the plane, and Spector struggled in his first game back.

Disappointing. But it should be interesting to follow these kids’ careers and see how they progress…

U.S. U-20’s Win Group

The U.S. U-20’s defeated Egypt 1-0 over the weekend to win their group and advance to the knockout stages. Jacob Peterson scored on a header off of a deflected Freddy Adu shot. Adu, along with Eddie Gaven, Marvell Wynne, and several other regulars were rested for the group’s final game against the last place team with qualification for the next round almost complete. Adu was brought on by coach Sigi Schmid in the 54th minute.

The U.S. faces another perennial power, Italy, on Tuesday in the Round of 16.

Argentina defeated Germany 1-0 in the group’s other game. The win was enough to see Argentina through. Germany snuck through to the next round as one of a few third placed teams to advance.

So far so good for Team U.S.A. Upset favorites Argentina, and drew with Germany. Italy will be another tough test, and the U.S., which hasn’t allowed a goal yet, will also have to produce more on the offensive end than the 2 goals total so far in the tournament.

D.C. United vs Revs

Went to the DC United game tonight and they beat the league’s best Revolution convincingly. Jaime Moreno scored a great goal and the defense held up as the Revs were weak in the back and had their offensive attacks stopped time after time. Dempsey didn’t have a good game, Ralston was solid but didn’t get enough service into Noonan, which made Noonan ineffective. If not for Matt Reis, who stopped Moreno on two breakaways, the final would’ve been 4-0. Clyde Simms came in as a sub and played effectively again in a short time period.
My Man of the Match: Jaime Moreno, nice goal, lots of chances. Runner up- Matt Reis, if not for him game would’ve been out of hand.
Biggest Disappointment: Marshall Leonard.

BTW, Ben Olsen did better than last game, disrupting the Rev attack and distributing the ball.

Sam’s Army

Interesting news from Sam’s Army here.
Seems like they are going to try to take it to the next level and get serious, not-for-profit status and all. I hope it works out. We have sat with the Sammers at all the qualifiers we have attended, and while they seem like a good bunch, we always managed to end up next to this one idiot. Anyway, I look forward joining them again in the future.

Here Comes Freddy…

Young phenom Freddy Adu is on the preliminary USMNT roster for the Gold Cup.

Now before we start a world wide party, like at the end of Return of the Jedi, remember it’s a preliminary roster. He could not make it to camp, or be invited to camp to train and never make it in a game.

Either way, it’s the start of what I hope is a long and successful national team career.

DC United v. Chicago Fire

Just came back from RFK where DC United beat the Fire 4 to 3. The first half was pretty sloppy offensively, and defense on both sides was pretty bad for the whole game. After Jaime Moreno scored on a penalty kick to make it 2-1 Fire just before half, he and Zach Thornton got into a weird collision going after the ball after he scored. Thornton got a yellow card after the two teams got into a little pushing match. Thornton was booed incessantly for the rest of the game. The second half saw DC United step up its offense and overcome a 3-2 deficit to win. Zach Thornton made some quality saves but his defense let him down, which included Tony Sanneh, although he had some good touches on the ball. Clyde Simms came in the second half and did well in a short time and Josh Gros ran well on the left.
My Man of the Match: Christian Gomez, scored 2 goals. Honorable mention for Dema Kovalenko.
Biggest Disappointment: Ben Olsen. Supposed to be the holding midfielder. Only thing he was holding was the Chicago Fire jersey as it ran by him.
